A 20-year-old student from the Technical University of Sofia has created an online platform for reporting obstacles on roads and sidewalks in the capital.
Tihomir Germenliev told BNT that he was inspired by living in a neighborhood where the sidewalks are not in very good condition.
"Actually, I wanted, perhaps, to make our city more accessible in one way," he commented.
The "SOFaccess" project is a digital map of Sofia, where we can see the various problems in pedestrian zones and submit a report.
"For problems such as broken sidewalks, those raised by trees, those that do not exist at all, missing or damaged manhole covers, non-working elevators or escalators in underpasses," Germenliev explained.
Anyone can access the platform and report a problem by scanning a QR code placed in various public places in Sofia – bus stops, trams, underpasses.
Submitting a report is a multi-step process. You need to select a location from the map, describe the problem, and attach a photo.
The project is part of the "Academy for Visionaries" of the Sofia Municipality, which provides an opportunity for young and creative people to realize their ideas for the benefit of society. "SOFaccess" is one of the awarded projects, and Lyubov Kostova is the mentor of the project.
Although the platform has been operational for a short time, over 210 reports have already been submitted to the municipality.
Tihomir Girmenliev: "We do not intend to contradict the municipality in any way; we only want to help by providing a map with all the problems in Sofia, so that they can easily plan where to allocate funds for repairs," the creator of the platform added.
The platform is free and does not require registration. Submitting a report is anonymous. It is sufficient for a person to have a connection to their surrounding environment and take the initiative for change.
"We can improve the quality of the environment in Sofia with small steps. Reporting a single issue in the SOFaccess project takes less than a minute. With this small step, we can contribute to living in a more accessible and beautiful city, so that one day we can truly live more pleasantly," Girmenliev added.
